Maintain an elite level of performance over such a long-time frame placed Steve in the fourth in Britain’s most decorated Olympians list. Adding to his plethora of results, Steve also secured three Commonwealth Golds and was crowned the winner of nine World Championships, a testament to his ability to hone peak performance.

For his unrivalled success in the sport, Steve was named amongst the 100 Greatest Britons and his fifth Olympic Gold in Sydney was placed number 1 in the 100 Greatest Sporting Moments. An exemplary role model, Steve’s commitment to the industry has seen him awarded a Knighthood in 2001 for his services to rowing and in 2011 BBC Sports gave Steve the accolade of the Lifetime Achievement Award in honour of his remarkable career.
