Robert Hannigan is a leading expert in cybersecurity and national intelligence. As a virtual keynote speaker, he offers unmatched insight into the digital landscape and the challenges shaping the future of security. Drawing from decades at the heart of government and technology, he brings clarity, authority, and practical understanding to a complex subject. His talks help businesses, governments and organisations grasp the realities of cyber threats, resilience, and innovation in an increasingly interconnected world.

Robert began his career in the private sector before joining the Northern Ireland Office in 2000. He quickly rose through the ranks, becoming Director of Communications, then Associate Political Director, and later Director-General (Political). His skill in negotiation and strategy played a key part in the Northern Ireland Peace Process, where he worked alongside Tony Blair’s team to help secure a lasting agreement. In 2007, he was appointed Prime Minister’s Security Adviser, developing the UK’s first national cybersecurity strategy and overseeing security and intelligence coordination across government. Three years later, he joined the Foreign and Commonwealth Office as Director-General for Defence and Intelligence, shaping national responses to global threats.

In 2014, Robert became Director of GCHQ, the UK’s intelligence, and cryptography agency, during a pivotal time for national security. His leadership modernised the organisation, strengthened relationships between intelligence and technology sectors, and led to the creation of the National Cyber Security Centre, which now protects the UK’s digital infrastructure. For his contributions to national security, he was honoured by Queen Elizabeth II with a CMG in 2013 and later received the US Intelligence Distinguished Public Service Medal in recognition of his international work. Beyond government, Robert has served as Chairman at BlueVoyant International, Senior Adviser at McKinsey & Company, Trustee at Bletchley Park, and Fellow at both Harvard’s Belfer Centre and the Royal United Services Institute. Since 2021, he has been Warden of Wadham College, University of Oxford, where he continues to mentor and shape future leaders.

As a virtual speaker, Robert blends deep technical understanding with accessible storytelling. His sessions explore topics such as cybersecurity, digital innovation, leadership, and crisis management. He has spoken at online events for global corporations and government agencies, offering pragmatic insights for executives and IT professionals alike. His recent book, ‘Counter-Intelligence: What the Secret World Can Teach Us About Problem-Solving and Creativity,’ was named one of The Economist’s best books of 2024. Whether addressing a boardroom, a conference audience, or a virtual team, Robert equips listeners with the knowledge to think critically, manage risk and thrive in a digital world.
