Helen Sharman was the first British astronaut to travel to space. Previously working as a chemist, Helen made history when she was selected to take part in astronaut training out of almost 13,000 applicants. Undergoing rigorous flight training in Star City near Moscow, involving extensive physical, mental and medical assessments, as well as testing her ability to learn a foreign language, Helen uses this training experience to provide highly engaging keynote speeches worldwide.
After graduating with a BSc Degree in Chemistry and a PhD, she has since obtained several honorary degrees and fellowships. Chosen to take part in ‘Project Juno’, Helen underwent eighteen months of training and became the first Briton to visit the Mir Space Station, taking on the Soyuz TM-12 mission which lasted eight days and launched on Saturday 18th May 1991. Following her trip into space, Helen was awarded an OBE in 1993 for her pioneering work.
Now working as a science communicator and keynote speaker, Helen uses her unique experience to share her insight on topics such as teamwork, leadership and motivation. Revealing what it was like living and working in space, Helen describes to audiences what weightlessness feels like, the importance of teamwork and how she adjusted to life back on Earth, readily sharing the insightful lessons she learnt along the way.
