  • Speaker exploring ethics, human–robot futures & AI’s role

David Hanson is a pioneering voice in robotics and artificial intelligence, best known as the creator of Sophia, the world’s first robot citizen. As the Founder and CEO of Hanson Robotics, he has redefined the boundaries of human–robot interaction, blending science, engineering and artistry to develop machines capable of empathy and expression. With his virtual keynotes, David shares a captivating glimpse into a future where humans and robots coexist, collaborate and learn from one another. His work challenges audiences to think deeply about the ethical, emotional and societal impact of AI – a conversation that is shaping the next era of technology.

David’s path began in the creative arts. After earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Rhode Island School of Design, he joined Walt Disney Imagineering in 1998 as a sculptor and design consultant, where he helped create lifelike animatronics for the world-famous theme parks. It was there that his fascination with combining artistry and intelligence took hold. In 2003, he founded Human Emulation Robotics, his first company dedicated to creating robots that could mimic human behaviour. Just two years later, he launched Hanson Robotics, the venture that would propel him to global recognition. Driven by his belief that robots could one day form genuine emotional connections with people, David developed a new generation of humanlike robots, each designed to learn, adapt and communicate naturally.

Through Hanson Robotics, David created some of the most advanced humanoids ever built, including Sophia, Zeno, Han, Albert HUBO and Professor Einstein. Sophia’s debut changed the public conversation around artificial intelligence, earning her UN Innovation Champion status and making her the first robot granted citizenship. David’s creations now serve in research, education and healthcare institutions worldwide, including the University of Cambridge, University of Geneva and University of Pisa. Alongside his pioneering work in robotics, he co-founded SingularityNET, a decentralised AI blockchain foundation, and established the Initiative for Awakening Machines, a non-profit dedicated to advancing beneficial AI.

A recognised innovator, David has been honoured with awards from NASA, the National Science Foundation, Tech Titans and the Cooper Hewitt Design Triennial, among others. His research has been published across robotics, materials science and cognitive science journals, and his work has been featured by the New York Times, BBC, Wired and Scientific American. Today, as a virtual keynote speaker, David delivers thought-provoking talks on the intersection of humanity and technology. His presentations – often featuring Sophia live – combine technical depth with human insight, making complex ideas accessible and engaging. Through every appearance, David invites audiences to imagine a future where machines amplify human potential, rather than replace it.
