Performance Director of British Cycling, Sir Dave Brailsford transformed Britain into a dominant cycling nation. Revolutionising the way cyclists train, Dave concluded that: “if you broke down everything that goes into riding a bike, and then improved it by 1%, you will get a significant increase when you put them all together.” This marginal gain philosophy is said to be the reason for Great Britain’s recent domination of the cycling track.

Beginning an early career as a consultant to British Cycling in 1998, Dave was appointed Performance Director in 2003 where he employed his winning philosophy to achieve impressive results. Constantly observing and measuring his athletes, Dave worked out which areas they needed to improve, and from that he tailored their training, combining physical, strategic and psychological factors to create a faultless training programme.

Information of Sir Dave Brailsford was taken from Dave’s keynote speaker agent.

The success of the marginal gains philosophy was evident at the 2004 Athens Olympic Games where his cyclists earned two gold medals, and the Olympic Games in the 2008 Beijing and 2012 London Gameswhere Dave’s team won an impressive eight Olympic gold medals. A true testament to Dave’s winning approach, the marginal gains philosophy is now seen as a guidebook to cycling success.

Following the London Olympic and Paralympic Games Dave was appointed MBE, CBE and Knight Batchelor in 2012For always going the extra mile, Dave has received multiple awards including the 2008 BBC Sports Personality of the Year’s Coach Award and the 2012 BBC Sports Personality of the Year’s Coach Award. He was also inducted into the British Cycling Hall of Fame in 2016.
