Charles Van Commenée is widely known for his influence on sports and athletics. The former Head Coach of British Athletics, Technical Director for the Dutch Athletics Federation and the Performance Director for the Dutch Olympic Committee, Charles has had a huge impact on sport around the globe. Throughout his career, Charles has become known for coaching some of the top athletes, which include the likes of Denise Lewis, Huang Zhihong and Kelly Sotherton.
Charles first became a coach when he was just 19 years old. Having found a passion for athletics, in particular competing in decathlons, Charles began to coach individuals whilst completing a physical education degree. His first major coaching job came as the coach of the Dutch javelin team before he was made the Technical Director of Combined Events and Throws for the Dutch Athletics Federation. It was in this role that Charles coached his first major star, Huang Zhihong, who went on to achieve a World Championship win.
Throughout his time as a coach, Charles was able to lead many prominent athletes to victory. Today he is widely remembered for Super Saturday – when he helped the London 2012 Athletics Team obtain four gold medals. Since his retirement, Charles has collected the knowledge he learnt as a coach to deliver a range of speeches on Performance Management and his ‘5 Steps Approach’.
A highly sought public speaker, Charles is called upon to deliver a range of online events from webinars to discussion panels. Covering topics such as high-performance culture, small margins, winning spirit and leadership, he utilises the knowledge and skills built during his time as a sports coach to engage corporate audiences.
