As the former Chief Economic Advisor to the Indian Government, Arvind Subramanian is widely regarded for his leading knowledge of finance and keen eye for economic events. Having successfully improved India’s communication of the union budget, and diagnosed the twin balance-sheet which triggered higher public investment, Arvind is considered by many to have been an essential cog in the Indian Government. A pioneering academic, he is a transformative virtual economics speaker to feature at webinars and online events.

In 2014, Arvind joined the Indian Government as their Chief Economic Advisor. For four years, following an extension in 2017, he had a prominent impact on the country’s financial prospects, before stepping down in 2018. During his appointment, Arvind increased public investment, conceptualised the Jan Dhan-Aadhaar-Mobile trinity and made the union budget more understandable to the public, thanks to an improved presentation of surveys.

Aside from his political role, Arvind is an internationally renowned academic. He currently teaches at Ashoka University as their Economics Professor, with previous positions including at the Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government and Johns Hopkins’ Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies. Arvind himself boasts a PhD from the University of Oxford, reflecting his advanced academic understanding of finance.

As a Development Economist, Arvind worked with the International Monetary Fund, where he was also the Assistant Director in the Research Department. Immortalising his understanding of economics, Arvind has also published multiple essays on topics ranging from trade to international economics – such papers have featured in the American Economic Review and Oxford Review of Economic Policy, to name a few publications.

Arvind was named by Foreign Policy magazine as one of the World’s Top 100 Global Thinkers in 2011, in celebration of his dramatic impact. He is widely regarded by many to be an expert on Indian and Chinese economies, as well as a leading authority on the evolving global economic power – Arvind’s expertise is reflected through his books India’s Turn: Understanding the Economic Transformation and Eclipse: Living in the Shadow of China’s Economic Dominance.
