Building strong skillsets in business management, finance and economics, Adair Turner is best known as the Director-General of the Confederation of British Industry– which he was appointed in 1995. Other career highlights include roles such as Vice-Chairman of Merrill Lynch Europe, Chairman of the Economic and Social Research Council and the Chair of the Overseas Development Institute’s Council. He was also fortunate to act as the first Chairman of the Committee on Climate Change and the Chairman of the Financial Services Authority.
Adair laid the foundations of his career studying history and economics at Gonville and Caius College in Cambridge. Making his mark during his studies, Adair became the President of the Cambridge Union and Chairman of the University’s Conservative Association. After graduation in the early days of his career, Adair used his education to teach economics part-time before joining petrol company BP. He has also held the position of Director of McKinsey & Co and worked at Chase Manhattan Bank.
Having contributed to society in various sectors and roles, Adair was appointed Life Peer in 2005 taking on the title of Baron Turner of Ecchinswell, a testament to the public services that he supplied to the nation. He was also elected to become an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Society back in 2016, another testament to his prowess as a businessman.
