Jason’s professional rugby career began in rugby league with Wigan, where he played 281 games and scored 171 tries, winning every domestic honour available. He was a 12-cap Great Britain and 7-cap England international, known for his pace and footwork, and played in numerous finals including the 1995 Rugby League World Cup Final. In 2000, Jason switched codes and joined Sale Sharks, where he helped transform the club, eventually leading them to their first Guinness Premiership title in 2006. At international level, Jason earned 51 caps for England and 5 for the British & Irish Lions, including his iconic role in England’s 2003 Rugby World Cup-winning team, where he scored the only try in the final. He went on to captain his country in 2004, becoming a ground-breaking figure in English sport.
Off the pitch, Jason was awarded an MBE in 2003 and an OBE in 2008, recognising his service to rugby and his impact as a role model. He continues to champion social mobility and youth development through initiatives like JR Talks and JR Sports Stars, working with disadvantaged communities and aspiring athletes. In 2017, he received the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Lycamobile British Ethnic Diversity Sports Awards, cementing his place as a leader beyond sport.
