Being openly gay can be challenging in the Christian faith, especially for a person of prominence, however, Reverend Richard Coles is the Vicar of Finedon who is bucking the trend. As a proud LGBT+ man, Richard uses his platform in the Church of England to harbour a culture of acceptance and teach progressive principles, backed by his former lifestyle as an 80s band member. With such a unique career, Richard’s virtual presentations are highly entertaining packed with anecdotes and offer an education on the topics of diversity and mental health.

Best known for his position as the current priest in Finedon, Richard began his journey to a career and life devoted to God in the 90s, when he began a degree in theology to explore his faith. Fast forward and Richard has made history for proudly living as a gay priest and promoting Chrisitan values since being ordained in 2005. Gaining media attention for his unique career path, Richard teaches love, acceptance and diversity to all through his role in the church, and has become known for expanding this to corporate clients through speaking engagements.

As a young adult, Richard followed his passion for music, firstly joining Bronski Beat as a saxophonist in 1983 before forming The Communards the following year. Reaching the Top 10 Charts on three occasions with tracks like ‘So Cold the Night’ and achieving the biggest-selling single of 1986 saw the band reach international recognition. However as fast as the fame came, Richard was being exposed to a lifestyle of drink and drugs, leading the band to split in 1988, where Richard began his journey to ministry.

Now a recognised figure in the media, Richard has appeared on comedy panel shows like QI, Would I Lie to You and even took to the floor on Strictly Come Dancing. Using his platform to share his experiences of suffering from mental health issues due to his sexuality and lack of acceptance, in addition to his life story, Richard has an exceptional reputation as a virtual speaker.
